Roof ballast is material whose weight performs a function within a selected roof or equipment system. It may form a designed layer or support arrangement. Existing weight on a roof does not automatically prove suitability for additional loading or a different use.

For roof work, identify the ballast present, its associated system and who may assess relocation. A photograph can show the upper surface but not every protective layer or structural starting point beneath it. Keep those limitations visible during preparation of the proposed work.

This page calculates neither required weight nor roof capacity. Obtain appropriate assessment before components are added, removed or redistributed. Record changes in the roof dossier so future maintenance does not rely on an arrangement that is no longer present on the building.

Worth asking

Frequently asked questions

Should I move ballast myself?

This site does not advise that. Have function, loading and work method assessed appropriately first.

Does existing weight prove capacity for expansion?

No. A new arrangement requires its own assessment.
