From an existing safe position, take an overview followed by a few identifiable details. Combine images with a short description of location and purpose. A useful photo set clarifies the investigation question but cannot replace assessment of concealed components.

Where does a useful photo set begin?

Start with an image showing the relevant roof area in relation to the building. The assessor needs to understand whether it is the main roof, an extension, a dormer or an adjoining roof. Give images simple names such as rear overview and room beneath extension.

An elaborate sequence is unnecessary when three clear images show the same information. Recognisability matters more than quantity. A detail without an overview can easily be assigned to the wrong component, especially when several similar roofs are present. Keep the pair together and record the normal position from which the photograph was taken, without using a ladder or roof to obtain a better viewpoint.

Which details should you add selectively?

Add details only when they are clearly visible from your existing position. A gutter corner, penetration or wall junction may be relevant where the report concerns that component. Describe an observed displacement, opening or discolouration without immediately turning the image into a technical diagnosis.

Avoid enlarging an image until its surroundings disappear. Keep the original file alongside any crop. An arrow or circle can identify an observation, but should not obscure an important detail. Photographs covering different subjects deserve separate explanations rather than one broad caption claiming to describe the condition of the entire roof. An unclear detail is better labelled uncertain than interpreted with unwarranted confidence.

Which information is usually missing from photographs?

A photograph does not show the complete layer assembly, fixing arrangement or moisture distribution. The back of a junction and conditions beneath a covering may remain concealed. State which parts cannot be seen. An inaccessible area is not an invitation to remove components yourself for the camera.

Add available documents only where they genuinely concern the roof shown. An old drawing may provide a starting point, but later alterations may differ from it. Record its date and origin. This allows an assessor to compare photograph, drawing and complaint without assuming every historical detail remains unchanged. Missing evidence should be visible within the brief rather than silently filled in from an illustration.

How should photographs be handed over clearly?

Bundle a small selection with dates, location descriptions and the question attached to each image. Separate photographs of reported damage from general building views. Where several occupants contribute, use the same names for roof areas so two descriptions are not mistakenly treated as different places.

Check whether unnecessary personal details, vehicle registrations or private interiors appear outside the relevant subject. This offline planner intentionally has no upload function and sends no files. You can record image names in your local summary instead. A contractor can subsequently determine which additional images or inspection are needed to assess the actual situation, rather than treating a convenient photo set as complete technical evidence.

Worth asking

Frequently asked questions

Should I use a drone for this preparation?

This guide provides no permission or operating instructions for drones. Keep your preparation to normal safe positions and have specialist imaging arranged appropriately.

Can I upload images to the planner?

No. The local planner sends no data and has no file upload. You can include recognisable file names in your own summary.

Are detail photographs more important than an overview?

The combination is generally more useful than either alone. The overview establishes where the detail belongs.
